Lesley McDowell & J David Simons on historical fiction. Book Week Scotland
Event on 2013-11-26 18:00:00
Two accomplished Glaswegian authors share their insights on historical fiction.
Lesley McDowell is the author, most recently, of Unfashioned Creatures, which is based on a real-life friend of Mary Shelley and is set in 1820s Dundee and London. It is "a meticulously researched gothic novel full of madness, ghosts and murderous desires…Monstrously good" (Louise Welsh). Lesley is also a non-fiction author and a critic for the Scottish Review of Books, Scotsman, Herald and Independent.
J David Simons is the author of three novels, two set in early-20th-C Glasgow and the most recent, An Exquisite Sense of What Is Beautiful, in Glasgow, London and Japan in the 1950s and the near-present day. It is "in the tradition of Graham Greene or William Boyd, taking in great sweeps of history without ever losing sight of the personal, the telling detail" (Chris Dolan).
